One of IIHR’s several flumes, used for teaching and research

One of IIHR’s strengths is found in its continuing visionary commitment to maintaining and enhancing its experimental facilities, while at the same time pioneering efforts in high-speed computational analysis and simulation of complex flow phenomena. This combination perhaps makes IIHR unique among fluids research laboratories, and permits varying, yet complementary, approaches for investigation and solution of a wide variety of flow problems.

Research facilities of IIHR include many hydraulic flumes, air- and water-flow units, a wind tunnel, a wave basin, and more routine experimental apparatus and instruments, as well as specialized facilities described in the photo galleries in the menu at left. They are housed in several IIHR buildings in the Iowa City/Coralville area, and the Lucille A. Carver Mississippi Riverside Environmental Research Station (LACMRERS), a state-of-the-art research facility along the Mississippi River.
