A computer model of a lungIIHR biofluids researchers are dedicated to understanding the unique fluid mechanics of biological flow systems in the human body, including the circulatory and respiratory systems. This complex and interdisciplinary area of research brings together engineers and health science researchers around the world to improve health care and quality of life for patients and their families. IIHR’s biofluids research work is supported by a variety of granting agencies, including NIH, NSF, and others.

IIHR biofluids researchers use state-of-the-art technology, including micro-PIV (micron-resolution particle image velocimetry) and multi-scale analysis, as well as computer simulations known as computational fluid dynamics, or CFD. Computer simulations of human systems (such as the heart or lungs) are more complex than any one computer—even a super computer—can process. For these large-scale computations, researchers use a cluster of more than 200 computers. The software “delegates” part of the computation to each processor. The computers do the work simultaneously, much faster than a single computer could. Parallelizing the computation in this way allows researchers to get faster and better simulations.
