Where is IIHR?
IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering is located on South Riverside Drive in Iowa City, Iowa, set on the banks of the Iowa River on the University of Iowa’s beautiful 1,700-acre campus. IIHR is part of the College of Engineering, one of the 11 colleges that make up the University of Iowa. The university’s many outstanding programs include IIHR, the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, the National Advanced Driving Simulator, the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (one of “America’s Best Hospitals”), world-renowned research programs in genetics and speech and hearing, and much more. Twenty-two Iowa varsity athletic teams compete in the Big Ten, providing excitement for spectators and fans.
Overview
Iowa City is in southeast Iowa, near the intersection of Interstate highways 80 and 380. Iowa City has been ranked one of the nation’s most livable cities (USA Today, 2006), and one of the best small metropolitan areas for careers (Forbes Magazine, 2009). Outside and National Geographic magazines have called Iowa City one of the country’s best places to live, and UNESCO has named it a “City of Literature,” one of just four worldwide.
Set near the geographic center of the United States, this small city has a population of about 75,000. It is a community built around higher education, with vibrant cultural opportunities and a long history of international connections, leadership, and accomplishment. Iowa City is rich in historic and architectural interest, with 64 sites listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, including the Pentacrest and Old Capitol at the center of campus. Iowa City offers the safe, friendly quality of life for which the Midwest is known.
From Iowa City, it is about a two-hour drive to Des Moines, the state capital. The Eastern Iowa Airport, just 15 miles north of campus, offers access to four airlines. The urban centers of Minneapolis–St. Paul, St. Louis, Omaha, Kansas City, and Chicago are all within a four- to five-hour drive.
